I am quite used to the normal speed cameras but today when going through Buxton there was a new type, facing me. I knew I was in a 30mph zone, and the speedo read 30mph so I should be OK. The real interesting thing is that as I passed it said Truvelo on it, and had a yellow detector, and blue pole, and IT WAS FACING AT ME. I wonder if it zapped me or read my number plate? I hate speed cameras, they are such a pain in the a$$. Why don't they put chicanes instead? Just a bit of a rant really, but the age of free thinking and common sense has gone from the UK.
Truvelo - French design - can photograph a vehicle travelling in either direction because it uses IR light to take the image. The old Gatso only takes an image (2 images actually) of the rear number plate because the flash might startle the driver if it was used on oncoming traffic. There's usually a 10% + 2 mph tolerance given, so the camera probably has a trigger speed of 35 mph. Chicanes don't make money to reinvest in more chicanes and generate more money.
Damn we don't have speed cameras yet in the U.S. that sounds a bit..extreme.. We do have the traffic light cameras though.
Have you seen them average speed cams? Now you cant even slow down when you see one and then speed up again.
In my country they are testing two cameras working together to measure the average speed between two points. Thats nasty !!
We've got those average speed cameras too, the SPECS ones. They say it's to stop the motorbikers that slow down and speed off. So they measure it over about half a mile. Those Truvelos are evil. They've got not radar! So you can forget your detectors, unless you have database ones. Underneath the road are pressure strips and they record the time interval and calculate the speed that way. In the end we will all be driving around like grannys or like an ant colony on the move.
Speed cameras are her to stay. Particularly, in cities where one has to maintain their driving speed.Ohterwise drivers take everything for granted.
