UK members, you should sign this petition concerning BT upgrading the national phone network to fibre optic. Japan has already got this and achieve speeds of over 100mbps in some circumstances - BT on the other hand have said they'll finish an upgrade to about 24mbps nationally by 2011! If you feel strongly like me that the government should give British citezens a fibre optic broadband network like Japan and other countries have, sign this petition on the Prime Minister's web site. http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/fibretothehome/ Dan Price (By the way, this isn't my petition but I really think this is a good idea - I get about 1.5mbps on my connection, and that' usually on a good day!) 100mbps is a dream...!
British Telecommunications plc is not state owned (at all) any longer. So the PM is powerless to do anything at all. Sorry about that.
They should upgrade here in the states. Centurytel (my isp) drags it's feet it seems to offer higher internet speeds Good luck with your petition.
If you read the petition, it does say that the government should give BT an incentive to do so and go with fibre - this is feasible.
There is now actually nearly 400 signatures which is fairly good. I'm hoping that this'll get noticed officially. Also take note - BT have been thinking about this issue themselves: pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.cfm?NewsID=10830
