I've managed to get a hold of a full uk postcode database out and in parts (with long/lat correct to 6 decimal place eg 57.148232 ), every single one, up-to date and basically as good quality (if not better) than the likes of multimap and certainly 100 times better than what googles geocoding service can offer, it also includes northern irelands BT**'s. Last thing I'm going to do is give it away, but do you guy's think there's a market for it? and if so what kind of price range do you think would be fair? Basically I reckon it should be public domain info anyways, but like everybody else, too greedy (or should I say too poor and lots of kids who are more important than the freedom of geo-data!) Edit: Also have a cleansed ip-location db, ip-country for those records that don't exist in ip-location, and a cleansed geo-names (all dwelling places worldwide + populations) to boot - and everything extreme mysql optimised using multiple spatial indexes (for both ips and geo-data), query speeds of av. sub 0.005sec on query combining 2million row ip table with 6.5million row geo table and pulling out all entries within Xkm of ip and distance calculation using great circle algo. no need for those awful binaries with access time's like that eh Interest?
Could you post a sample of the data? That might help establish if there is a market for this at DP, and if so, price suggestions might follow. Also, might be worth posting this in the "content" forum.
here's 20 rows of postcodes.. data's a bit obvious as to what it is.. every postcode in the uk with long/lat +----------+---------------+---------------+ | postcode | lon | lat | +----------+---------------+---------------+ | GL3 4EG | -2.1654910000 | 51.8482130000 | | GL3 4EH | -2.1585870000 | 51.8458850000 | | GL3 4EJ | -2.1604350000 | 51.8469790000 | | GL3 4EL | -2.1594040000 | 51.8468910000 | | GL3 4EN | -2.1589710000 | 51.8475750000 | | GL3 4EP | -2.1585770000 | 51.8471080000 | | GL3 4EQ | -2.1627000000 | 51.8472190000 | | GL3 4ER | -2.1611920000 | 51.8476260000 | | GL3 4ES | -2.1587290000 | 51.8491480000 | | GL3 4ET | -2.1579000000 | 51.8487000000 | | GL3 4EU | -2.1580930000 | 51.8497070000 | | GL3 4EW | -2.1589100000 | 51.8467480000 | | GL3 4EX | -2.1576200000 | 51.8472980000 | | GL3 4EY | -2.1570730000 | 51.8488090000 | | GL3 4EZ | -2.1574430000 | 51.8465970000 | | GL3 4HA | -2.1563730000 | 51.8476950000 | | GL3 4HB | -2.1565070000 | 51.8489000000 | | GL3 4HD | -2.1577600000 | 51.8459850000 | | GL3 4HE | -2.1573810000 | 51.8455360000 | | GL3 4HF | -2.1555500000 | 51.8449540000 | +----------+---------------+---------------+ also available as spatial (GEOMETRY), all other ip+geodata is all mysql spatial (however can easily be converted to anything one likes) ps: the market is definately there, the data costs a bomb to get from it's only source (royal mail) - but whats a reasonable price? (or should I just to hell with it and launch a site selling it along with php/perl/asp/python modules to call it.. and a bit of geo info such as how to calculate distances between postcodes etc..
I would think the market price for this (on DP) would be somewhere between GBP20 and GBP35. Maybe more if marketed elsewhere. The royal mail opportunity is indeed, ridiculous. If you are going to market this, I would strongly suggest an online demo of the db capabilities. (I might also be interested). I really don't envy the amount of work this must have taken to assemble. You deserve to do well with it (given the other royal option).
yeah I think I've decided to knock up a quick site with working demo and a google maps integration so people have all the proof they need, probably got a bit higher than GBP35 to be honest, maybe GBP100 or perhaps an api offering instead.. at £35 a pop it'd be nothing for a few peeps to chip in £5 each and then rapid share it! Alas I just don't know. And yeah it was no mean feat collecting it all.. had to check 12 million postcodes to work out which where real and which weren't :|
Are you sure. I have just downloaded a complete UK postcode data souce : 26 meg file from a government website and its free info?
is it full postcodes? ie.. M24 5TX or only partial ie "M24 5"? and does it include full accurate long lat for each postcode?
