I notice that the UK has a lot of free directories. I'm guessing that when I submit to them, it doesn't really help my SERPs in the US? Or am I off the mark on this one?
It probably wont go a long way to improve your serps, but it wont hurt and may help increase your serps in the UK a little at least, though this of course only matters if you want UK visitors .

If you're submitting to UK directories, why would you want to help your serps in the US? In other words, the chances are that the website you're submitting will be off-topic for a lot of free UK directories if you're targeting the US market, and a high rate of rejected submissions isn't going to do anything much for your website.
