    Hello,
as I'm currently about setting up a new server I need to chose the OS at first. I'm quite familiar with the debian/Ubuntu structure so I wanna stay with it but I can't decide which of both. Which are the pros and cons? Are the other similar structured OS?

    Thanks for your help.

try for centos, as you will be able to get most of the softwares via direct yum, others, you will have to compile from source,

also, there are a lot of guides available on internet for centos then ubuntu then debian ( redhat/centos are mostly same)

    Regards

Both Ubuntu and Debian are good OS, but Centos is the most appropriate variant for the Linux server.

I would be more CentOS swayed depending on what you need it for? Just a web server? Or is there more you need?

Debian: For experienced user for personnal computer
Ubuntu: For everyone want to try/use linux for their personnal computer

CentOS: For all the server needs. Note that all hosting control panel support centOS if you plan to install one.

    Hi,

well, to be honest, I never used Ubuntu on a server.

Why more people use centOS on their server? Because cPanel only support centOS and almost all hosting provider provide cPanel to their users.

I don't use Debian anymore because the develloppement cycle is always too slow. When Debian publish a new release, all packages are already outdated and I don't want to run Debian with the testing or unstable repository.

I use Ubuntu at home to replace Debian because Ubuntu solve the problem release cycle of Debian listed above.

I see. But since I use Froxlor which is made for Ubuntu/CentOS, centos is not required. I'll see how it works and then I'll report here. ;)

    Hi,

since you will use Froxlor, I suggest to use Debian because Froxlor have their own softwares repository to install their softwares on your server.
