    HI all,

I just joined the forum, i'm pretty new to website admin as I've never had to deal with it before but it's now been thrown at the IT guy. (me)

I have a quick question, our website is currently hosted by our ISP, it's a pretty basic site so for what it was being used for this wasn't a problem. It's sitting on a Virtual Web Server with probably 1000's of other websites sharing a server.

We will be in the near future adding some e-commerce to our website. THis will include: customers being able to book orders online, check up on order status etc.

My manager has requested I find out if we can keep the existing site and content hosted by the ISP, however for security reasons, have a link - to the e-commerce section hosted in house on our own web server? I'm pretty sure this is doable? I just want to make sure. I don't think we want a completly different url for the e-commerce if it can be avoided. We want to host that portion in-house for security reasons, who wants their customer database hosted on a Virtual Web server at an ISP type of thing.

Thanks in advance for the replies.

The easiest way to do it is to point a subdomain toward the IP of the secure server. On most setups, you will need to do this with a zone file. That's where you're going to run into trouble, because many shared servers won't let you modify the zone file for your domain.

If you ISP hosts your dns, ask they create an A record to point to your ip of the server inhouse, if they don't allow it, or simply won't do it. then get the ip of their webserver that your site is hosted on, move your DNS to a hosted dns service (u can get them for as little as $2...) and then just point the main site back to the ISP 's shared hosting ip and the subdomain to your ip.
