Two results in Google, should I 301?

If I have two results in Google, should I 301 the less important page? I recently did some 301s for a secondary site that was ranking better than our primary site and the results were great. Instead of having #9 and #25 we now have #7 for our primary site (was the #25).

Now I see other cases where we have key terms where we are two results together for the same site like #11 and #12. Usually this is the home page and a page directly related to the key phrase. Should I do anything to enhance this? Is there a way to get this to occur more often?

Note: I am looking only for good, clean white hat techniques.

It's going to be tough to be sure either way. If you are done with the other pages you should probably do the 301s.

    I'd definitely do a 301 in this case. :)

Do the 2 web pages contain the same content? If not I wouldn't 301 redirect one to the other, instead I would optimize them both to appear in the top 10. 301 redirecting is used to provide search engines with the new location of content that as been moved, not to juke search engines.

I wouldn't 301 redirect a page unless its got backlinks to it and its completely useless.

I wouldn't 301 unless they have the same content.

If the content is same for both the pages then only 301 is required otherwise i wouldn't advise you for 301 redirect
