Two questions related to trademarking/wordmarking

Hey all. A bit new to this trademarking/wordmarking thing and I have a couple of questions.

    1. We're a US-based company launching a new service for our site and have found that a UK company has filed for a trademark for the service name in the US (Grrr...). So we're going to have to change the name (which in a way is good that we caught it this early). My question is what are the steps that we should take to ensure that the new name doesn't have the same issues as the old. Certainly the first is to do a basic trademark search. We're also going to make sure we snag the domain name of whatever we use to avoid that issue (a problem with our previous name). And of course a Google search would be good. Anything else that we need to consider?

    2. What is the cheapest way to have a trademark or wordmark filed? We're skating thin cash-flow wise right now so it's important to me that we keep costs to a minimum. Does anyone have any successful experience with doing this on the cheap?

I have never done thsi, but i do know from experience, when you are looking to get a business license/name the best thing to do is go to someone who doesn't stand to make a profit from yoiu. EG. go to your local chamber of commerce ask them. Go to your local better business beaurau they will probobaly be able to point you in the direction of some cheap resources. Just don't go to an accountant or a consultant who wants to make a buck off of you. See what I mean?
