I found a domain name I like much better than my current name, but I have already moved up pretty high in the SERPS. Can I have both domains pointing to the same content???
You are supposed to do a Permanent redirect, but I ran two sites like that for a couple of years without a problem. My PR went down when I redirected . In the end, that's the right thing to do, and PR doesn't have much(if anything) to do with rankings anymore.
I ran into this problem after 6 months of SEOing my old site. It was just starting to pay off when I realized my domain name had really pigeonholed me. The crap sever I was hosting with didn't let me redirect, but in the long run it was a GOOD thing. Here's how/why: Every page on the old site now carries at least 3-5 links to the new site- but I tried to change as little actual content as I could. This DID negatively effect rankings for about 6 weeks- then the old site finally burst out of the sandbox and I had SEO'd well enough that even all those outbound links didn't keep it from being number 1 on it's keyword and several others. So by keeping the old site I could just manually redirect ("hey everybody! go here!") and not lose business OR pr/ranking. But I took it a step further. When I started SEOing the new site, I woiuld email potential partners and say "I'll give you a link from PR4 site A in exchange for a link to PR0 (new site) site B." so far this hasn't affected the old site's number #1 ranking but has given me a HUGE, huge, HUGE allinanchor boost for a competitive keyword. My theory is that eventually the scales will even out. The new site will climb into the rankings where it belongs and hopefully the old site will hold steady. Not only will I have not sacrificed PR or rankings through the whole process, but in THEORY, It's possible that I may be able to attain 1, 2, 3, and 4 rankings on my keyword(s).
