As a CTR experiment, I created two AdGroups in the same campaign with the exact same keywords. One AdGroup uses boring, factual text while the other I would consider more hyped text, IE : "Insane selection, price/quality are unmatched.." According to Google's Help section, when two AdGroups contain the same keywords, impressions should be evenly distributed between the two however when I look at my stats, I'm seeing 3 times more impressions on AdGroup #1. Anyone know why? I just found this site and I love it btw... Thanks, Matt
Are you saying you created two different ads for the one campaign. If so you can create three different ads with different text in each. The idea is to see which text produces the best click through rate. After awhile Google will show the best ad more often than the others.
Excactly, I've created two different ads in the same campaign with the same keywords but different text in each. It's only been 3 days but Adgroup #1 is displaying 150% more than Adgroup #2. It makes sense that Google would favor the AdGroup with the most click-thrus but they're not giving the two groups nearly the same exposure to begin with so how could anyone judge which is more successful? I'm just kind of venting here.....
Do both AdGroups have the same Max CPC? If so, then Google will generally evaluate each ad group after 1000 impressions and determine which to display more often based on CTR.
Originally quoted by Bradical: "Do both AdGroups have the same Max CPC? If so, then Google will generally evaluate each ad group after 1000 impressions and determine which to display more often based on CTR." I endorse Bradical's point of view. Theoretically, if the ads both start from ground zero, they would both (each) show %50 of the time. Then, as CTR is established, the system will adjust to show the better performing ad (CTR-wise) more often, relative to whatever the CTR difference is.
Did you create two brand new text ads completely from scratch, or was one of them pre-existing? The other thing you can do is turn off the option to "optimize the serving" (or something similar of your ads of your ads. Then it will show them equally. I forget if you can do this on a campaign level or if it is a global option, but I'm too lazy to log in right now to find out.
