One thing I will tell you is to make sure you continuously tweet and make your tweets interesting. So many people sign up, send a few tweets then stop. If you continuosly say interesting information that people care about you will develope followers. Oh and don't use it to just announce sales and special offers- people don't care about this. It has definitely grown into a place for people to spam but that won't get you followers. Like someone else said if you have interesting stuff to tweet people will follow and that can be a great thing.
Twitter will not help you with your SEO in my opinion, but can help with increasing your reach, brandability, traffic, sales etc.
It will generate more traffic but they might not be your niche followers. It will give some exposure, not that much to do with SEO.
Well I don't think twitter will help you in your rankings. It would deliver traffic if done properly, but I don't think it would affect the search engine results.

As per my experience i am not getting any backlinks from twitter but yeah i am getting lots of traffic for my website.
Twitter serves no real SEO value, Links posted on Twitter have NOFOLLOW's set to them. The only value they have is for brand recognition, real time search (which currently is only happening on certain data centres and on the search options tab within Google). What you can hope for SEO value, is to link to something useful, hopefully enticing people to write about the thing you have linked to, therefore producing a backlink on thats persons website/blog. It's worth keeping up some linking on social networking sites though, because you never know in the future google may start. Hope this helps.
