I went to twitter today only to find a message that its overcapacity for over an hour. Is twitter not able to handle its own traffic?

It happens once in a while, don't worry about it. :)

    Try again in 15-20 minutes.

It's just normal for Twitter since it became popular in 2010 as they are growing faster than they are able to build up server capacities

probably some server issues. Too many people going on twitter or tweeting at the same time. or maintenance.

It happens quite often and I think the most practical thing to do is to simply just try to access twitter at a later time. You can use the time to do other marketing activities like creating good quality content that will help to attract more traffic back to your website.

They can't handle all those vain celebrities tweeting every single thing they did everyday. LOL

Sometimes the site gets too much traffic but then it returns to normal in an hour or two.

Don't worry if you get this message. It is Twitter's automatic landing page for when it its server is over capacity. It happens from time to time. If you can try again after about a half hour or so it should work. If you have a scheduled post with an application such as Timely, I'd suggest double-checking that your post went out at that time. Want to make sure you're post is "heard"!

I think they are down for some maintenance or having updates on their system. Let's just spare them some time.
