The title kinda says it. What I personally feel that twitter has gone completely like an "Event Management" company for celebrities. Ok, although not literally, but most of the twitter is flooded with celebrities, their talks and their followers. Just think yourself - what kind of tweets are mostly popular? If you will analyze you will find that they are celebrities. When was the last time you remember any famous tweet from a common person? So I don't really see the room for common or the rather "non-celebrity" class to use twitter with its full potential. What is your opinion?
You either need to already be famous, or make yourself famous using Twitter. Some people have great ideas for tweets and end up making their Twitter feeds very popular even though they are not famous.
Wrong. I attended WordCamp in NZ last year and the tweets around that were fascinating. Couldn't attend this year but followed the discussions. Nobody "famous" involved but specialists in their world. I only follow one "celebrity" and all the others are people in my community, sport contacts and work related. My sisters live overseas (in very different time zones) and if there is a drama with family I'll use twitter to give updates so that they are not woken in the night by my text messages. It's also 50c to tweet from my phone but 80c per international text. If I need them to get up and onto a plane then I'll phone or text. The less important stuff can be handled by twitter. I suspect you just need to network more to find people you really want to follow and stop worrying about how many you follow and how many follow you.
