Indeed, and I will also use the term do-follow. It is obvious what it means.

Thank you! The claim of a dofollow link attribute annoys me as well.

Yes I am the Dofollow Police.....how did you know? Must be my badges!! ;)

    Let me ask you this,

If people kept addressing you as George?? would you correct them or allow them to continue to call you the wrong name, because you don't want to hurt their feelings?

Or if they called your girlfriend / wife - your boyfriend / husband

Would you allow them to do so?

Why should we allow people to think something is correct when its wrong?

Why should we allow others to think something is right, when its wrong, just because one person says its so?

If someone said you were a dog would you want someone to correct them or allow them to keep saying you are a dog??

Get the point? Spreading the wrong information hurts others, and causes confusion....

    :)

Actually all links are followed, the tag simply helps the SEs to not pass link juice.

Of course by not naming it correctly, the SEs screwed things up, but then they are search engines, no one claimed they were all that smart....

Yes, dofollow is such a thing.

Nofollow is an html rule, whereas dofollow is a "movement", much like the "women's lib movement".

It's simply people allowing the link to be not set as nofollow.

"Actually all links are followed, the tag simply helps the SEs to not pass link juice."

    This is not correct.

*However, nofollow is not the only way to stop a link from being followed, so this argument is kind of silly.

I always thought they are still counted and indexed but Google wont pass PR
juice to them as they are affiliate or non relevant in content.

Regardless of follow or not it still gets indexed by google and others...

If anyone can find the defination please post... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nofollow

    thx

Okay and before the rel=nofollow came along there was never any use of the word dofollow in relation to links.

Hence there is no such thing as dofollow and if you can find any evidence to the contrary from a search engine I will send you $100.00

And you might want to do some research on the effects of a link with rel=nofollow.

Guaranteed they are followed, and simply do not pass link juice.

Good luck trying to earn that $100.00 :)

I was not trying to be harsh.....just want to get a point across.

Maybe I should explain my position on why this bothers me so,

Thanks to the spread of the missinformation I now have both potential clients, and many of my clients, asking me about or informing me that they want dofollow links.

As such I now need to explain to each that there is no such thing and go into further details of why the word has spread online.

I would estimate that it takes up 2 hours of time each week in education about something that does not exist.

Over the course of a month that amounts to 8 hours or a day of work for other people...

That time could have gone to building links, editing pages, writing articles, contributing here, spending time with family or friends, or riding my ATV

Instead those hours are lost due to others spreading a fable.......

Hope this helps to explain a bit....

    :)

    Umkay...

Right, if I actually said that it is an actual rule then I would show you what it's true. However, I never said it was a rule...so Good Luck getting anyone to take you up on your $100.00 offer.

I'm sure you know that there are other ways to stop a spider from crawling a link. And since there are other ways to influence what is crawled, a link could be "dofollow" or "not nofollow" and still could look fine but not actually pass juice or even be crawled at all.
