Yes twitter affects Google rankings. Twitter can also be a good source of traffic.

 

Twitter is interesting, to say the least. I've seen blogs that essentially count "retweets" of excerpts tweeted by a bot earlier as the equivalent of "trackbacks" like those in Wordpress. Therefore there is some indirect SEO value still related to Twitter.

As far as indexing goes, ... You do present a convincing argument, what with all the bots actively crawling on the moment you Tweet your url, but I still maintain that Google utilizes social networking as a way to find websites, or rather more specifically pages, that it needs to crawl.
