I would think as long as you are targeting like-minded people, your traffic should be targeted

I agree with the answer above. Not so much for building traffic but rather for brand awareness.

If you know how to use them properly, it can really increase traffic to your site. For example , in twitter, search for users who are within the same niche, interact with them, build a good relationship with them then eventually they can ask their followers to check out your site.

Join Facebook groups related to your topic, befriend the people in those groups and then post news bulletins, which will appear on their homepage.

Facebook is very good and well targeted even for age, gendor, etc. Twitter is a bit more difficult because of all of the people that don't get that people don't like spam. Move people from Twitter to Facebook and then talk to them. You can get a better overall ROTI (Return On Time Investment) with less traffic but most people don't realize that.

Neither one does what is expected; bottom-of-the-barrel methods.

They are both highly overrated, especially Twitter. You have fools following one another, and practically all do not even read one anothers' posts. They just "follow" one another.

    It's laughable stupidity.

Clueless noobs with dead sites and complete imbeciles say it works.

You will find out soon enough on your own.

the key with these social marketing sites is to USE them. just setting up an account is not enough. you have to post something that engages your fans or followers at least 2-3 times per week. otherwise it is like buying a new car and never getting the keys.

Ok then you just started it. Look! Make friends on facebook and collect followers in twitter, then share the links of your site's posts, products, news, any new event or new thing which you launch on your site. Your friends and followers see them which cause increase your site's traffic.

If you want traffic from both of these sites so remember if you have relevant followers on twitter and relevant friends on facebook so you can get a lot of traffic. You can also get traffic via yahoo answers.

Both are good but facebook provide more options and variety of ways that could be used for this purpose.
