Facebook really fizzled for me. It has a great inital push and then died off. I think it really depends on what your site is. Twitter on the other hand has increased my traffic, revenue and new visitors 10 fold. Once I learned the ins and outs of Twitter, I've been seeing growing success. My site is specifically oriented for Canadian travel and tourism. I setup a twitter page for my site http://twitter.com/DayTripsCanada/ and then proceeded to follow people I was genuinely interested in. From there, I started following people related to travel and tourism in Canada. Within about 30 days I was at 1200 followers (mostly non-spam) who were interested in what I had to say. I then setup RSS2Twitter and a custom "random" RSS feed of 1 title/link to my Day Trip ideas. I then set RSS2Twitter to tweet an idea about once every 2 hours or so. That drives a lot of traffic to my site and gives me a lot of re-tweets. I also re-tweet a lot of travel and tourism related information throughout the day as I notice it on my Twitter feed. Doing this makes you a popular person and you find more and more people spreading your Twitter account and links on a daily basis to their followers.

    To sum it up:

    1. Create a good Twitter brand
    2. DON'T SPAM. Don't act spammy. Don't over post links. Don't keep posting the same information
    3. Follow everyone who interests you or who would have direct interest in your site
    4. Make sure to re-follow anyone who follows you
    5. Take part in the various rituals like #FollowFriday or #travel etc. to build friends and a network
    6. Re-tweet relevant information from other Twitter users
    7. Don't make your account entirely about your site! Add some personality. Tweet about off-topic things every now and then.

I've only ventured in Facebook marketing by creating a Facebook Page for my site.

By allowing visitors to join the page via a link I placed on my site, my visitor returns has improved by many folds. You might want to try that.

Of course I do make regular FB wall posts and added info relevant to my site.

Tell me how twitter is effective since the user has to be online to see the tweet in the homepage which isn't very effective.

No.. depending on how many people they follow.. your tweet will appear when the next login.

The power of twitter is that people have it on the cell phones, blackberrys, work computers, home computers. They key is to make sure you've got a post at least once every two hours... that way you hit the most people at once. You should also target the prime hours.. so early morning, noon, after work, before bed.

Don't forget, people can always click onto your profile to see every tweet you've ever made. I'm telling you.... If you can get 1000 followers and you offer on-topic content relevant to those followers, guaranteed, every link you post will receive at least 30 clicks.

Imagine if you had 10,000 followers x 10 links a day!

    3000 clicks! Targeted clicks.

The biggest tip I can offer is this... DON'T SPAM. Be serious. Make friends. Post relevant. Don't over post. Your Twitter account should be a reflection of your business. If you put junk and spam in, people will assume junk and spam and not bother with you.

keen4kash, you (along with the rest of the idiots here), I had to stop in mid sentence so I could go get my boots before I could read the rest of your post.

The bullshit that gets posted here....

Inexperienced webmasters who truly want to learn and make money don't have a chance as long as they read some of the shit on this board.
