Twitter, am I missing the point?

I'm sorry but I have seen alot of traffic building methods and I just don't see how twitter really works.

In my opinion when I ever see people go "follow me" and I click on there site, I just see stuff that makes me think wow I am no better off or in any way impressed.

Someone fill me in on what I am missing..?

I think Twitter is good, because it builds a relationship with your customers or potential customers. However It's still far from main-stream...

It does however show that you are a real person, and that could go a long way...

I agree with quangvan, it's all about relationships. It would not be hard to have 2,000 followers, but without a relationship with those followers very few would be clicking on your links. I only have about 190 followers, and very few click on any of the links when I tweet.

it's not nonsense it's brilliant to promote a blog for example just post that you got a new post and a tinyurl link and then it will draw your followers to you blog. the more followers the more viewers for your blog it's pretty simple :D you only need to get enough followers

    1) Building rapport
    2) Promotion
    3) Building credibility
    4) Updating your network of followers
    5) Having a little fun
    6) Sharing ideas

All of which point to the actual GOAL being to promote yourself and build your lists.

I am known to post a little goofy update from time to time on my own twitter account but mostly, I let my followers know when I have a new article out or when I'm promoting a special offer.

    Worthless?

Not by a long shot. I've tracked clicks to my web site from my twitter account. And anything that brings me new relevant traffic is definitely worth looking in to.

Twitter is essentially a relationship-building and public relations tool.

It's like a combination between email marketing/list-building and blogging. You use it to build up a band of followers (literally) who like your "story" and become involved in what you're doing, be it your product, a cause, an idea, art, etc.

I don't see it going anywhere any time soon. Barack Obama uses Twitter. All of the "internet marketing gurus" are jumping on it and tweeting regularly. Rock bands, celebrities and business moguls are jumping on it as a way to put themselves out there and influence people.

It will become fairly ubiquitous soon.

Yes, it's nonsense to people who don't know how to do it and don't understand it's principle.. LOL

Twitter is one of the most effective ways to generate valid traffic in case you are not aware.

It was great when Name Cheap was running a contest and giving away free domains. Now I can not see much point. It is mostly a bunch of spam. Maybe I am just not hip enough.
