Tweeter followers

I have to many people who are new followers on my Twitter account than I can ever respond to.
I hoped that using copy and past thank you with a few urls back to my site in it, email back thanking them for following me and letting them know I am now following them but that did not help much. How important is it to send a thank you note back letting people who are new followers know I appreciate them following me and that I am now following them in my effort to get twitter traffic back to my site? Is there a way to automate this proses.

I believe you don't need to thank everybody because most of them don't read it anyway

TweetLater has changed its name to SocialOomph.

But yes, it's a good service and Dewald Pretorius (the author) is very responsive to requests.
