    Does anyone know what changes to be made to apache to improve the performance of proxies and decrease server load? Also is lightttpd better for proxies? is there any tweaks that can be made to lighttpd for proxies? thank you so much

    one more question, is an AMD or INTEL cpu better for running proxies?

    Install mod_proxy
    </joke>

    mod_perl helps a lot with cgi speed and load. Otherwise PHP 5 is better than PHP4, Apache 2 is better than Apache 1. PHP should run as apache, not cgi.
