.tv domains - Does this hurt SEO?

I'm looking to buy a .tv domain. However just wondering if this would be hard to rank. My concern comes from the fact that .tv stands for the Islands of Tuvalu. Since I want to rank in the USA and Canada, this might this be a problem. But I'm not sure. I know that other region domains, such as .uk, .au, .nz, will have a harder time ranking in USA over general domains such as .com, .net, etc. So does owning a .tv a good idea? Will it be hard to rank in the USA because it is a domain for the Tuvalu Island?

TLD doesn't effect SERPs/SEO to be honest.

Your chosen TLD can have an effect on the SERPS IMHO.

Go and read through this recent post by Rand Fishkin from seoMOZ. He is discussing exact match domain names, that is a domain that exactly matches a target keyword (which I know is not relevant to your question). But take a moment to look at the second graphic where it shows that .com exact match domains out rank both .net and .org by more than double.

If there is that much effect in exact matching domains then there is bound to be an effect in non matching domains.

I heard that Google values .com domains more than other, but not sure about it.
