.tv domains - Does this hurt SEO?

I am thinking of buying a .tv domain. However I hear that location specific domains (.uk .ca .au) do not rank as well as more universal ones (.net, .com). I found out that .tv stands for Islands of Tuvalu. I want to rank this domain in Canada and the US. Will having this domain hurt me?

 

Well those specific domains (.ca, .uk, .au) are meant for a specific market. They can still rank high universally, but they do better for their target market.

.tv domain is perfect for a rich media content website. If the nature of you site is indeed rich media content it really shouldn't hurt you at all.

The government of Tuvalu has been leasing .tv for over a decade now. With a low population (10,000-11,000 people in total) you shouldn't have any Tuvalu based competition. And anyway, a large majority of people have never ever head of Tuvalu.

Try posting this thread in SEO section. You will definitely get more responses.

 

.TV domains look attractive for a multimedia rich web site. I believe negligible amount of people will recognize .tv as Tuvalu.

 

Ya it is, But it is not much effective you can use any if you know how to optimize it.

 

although .tv domains are considered related to tv channels or some news rich websites, if your website theme is related to news, then this domain is perfect one to choose for, and not at all bad for seo purpose.

If you are going to use a .tv domain, keep it to movies, news, tv shows.

Otherwise it's a tad silly.

then why not you choose a domain name with .tv.uk
then it everything will be great. orelse go with the normal one which is .com
.com is use from lot of radiao and tv channel as well rather then .tv .

 

I think domain extension name is not the problem why they don't rank their site well in search engine. The problem there is they use specific domain name extension but not targeting particular geographic location.

buying a .tv domain for a multimedia content actually helps seo if the domain is of good quality. I bought a .tv domain name few months back and now getting few traffic from search engines

 

Its very difficult to rank .tk domain, i basically believe that .com is best domain then .net or org.

 

Having keywords in your domain name only makes a difference to your SEO when your domain name is the exact-match keyword that you want to rank for AND is the .com or local .com version (eg .com.au) of the keyword.
