Turn Off Post Counts on Suggestions & Feedback

As the proud owner of an infraction received when I posted a suggestion to this suggestion and feedback forum....

The infraction was for making a post to inflate post count.

    1) People who post suggestions and feedback here are generally doing it because they have an issue, problem, suggestion, etc - just what the forum name implies. There is no motive for post count inflation, and if there was, then this would be the last place to try and sneak one by the mods watchful eyes.

    2) If you're going to judge and penalise suggestions and feedback based on your perceived value of the suggestion, then odds are that most people aren't going to bother. Risking an infraction in exchange for what? A chance at improving this place, which many of us genuinely care about (despite how some people treat us).

    Suggestion:

Either turn off post counts on this sub-forum, so people can suggest things without fear of retribution, or exclude this sub-forum from the post count rule.

I eagerly await another infraction for making an unworthy suggestion. Rinse, lather, repeat.

It might be easier for you to forget about the infraction, turning post count off will be a green light for people to post all kinds of rubbish. That would lead to Mods giving them for worthless posts instead.

    Thanks Brian

That infraction doesn't only apply to post count padding. It's the same infraction we give for posts that add no value to the current discussion. That's why the infraction notice states "Running Up Post Count/Post Has No Value."

In your case it looks more like the mod just chose the wrong infraction from the list, and it should have been an infraction for an inappropriate post -- if you start threads to complain about infractions, you get another as per the sticky thread here. You actually got off easier than you should have -- a 30 day infraction rather than the 3 month one. Of course if you really want me to, I can correct that error for you. ;)

Thanks for the offer jhmattern, but I've got so many infractions at the moment, as your mod-staff go back looking at old posts of mine from the dawn of time, I'll surely have many months of red-flags to enjoy well into 2010.

How would the infraction system ever get suggestions for improvement, unless someone experienced them first hand? Are people supposed to just suddenly go, hey, that rule I've never thought about, or infringed upon, could be improved, because xyz?

That scenario isn't going to happen.

Brian1970 - I hardly think the feedback and suggestions forum would be the place for people to go looking for post count boosting. Knowing that this is likely the best mod-hunting grounds on the site, the likelihood of spamming, anywhere on the site is greater than this forum, with or without post-counts.

What's the difference between complaining about an infraction and suggesting a change to the way infractions work? If you've got an infraction, and you suggest a change, there is no difference.

Anyway, I'll stop bugging you with suggestions for making things better, since there seems to be more energy spent on defending a bad position than on actually giving a nanosecond of thought to suggestions that could make things better.

And jhm, thanks again for taking the time to make some thoughtful commentary and posts, even with some humour splashed in - it's a refreshing change from sawzall...
