    I have a blog that is getting LOTS of traffic, and people are telling me to get a domain and post the blog on there.

    How do you do this? Just register with a domain, and just copy and paste the blog template into the new domain?

    Any help would be great!!
    Thanks!

    If you are going from a blogger blog to a wordpress blog, there are import utilities that make it easy.

    Step 1. Choose your destination platform. Wordpress is nice, free, and not too difficult to set up.

    Step 2. Get web hosting. Check the forums here for suggestions. Do you know your average monthly bandwidth?

    Step 3. Get a domain name. (Sometimes bundled in with step 2 above. If so, it may be a bit of runaround to change the destination for the name later.) Set your domain name to point to your new hosting space.

    Step 4. Install blog software. Check in the control panel for your hosting, there may be an automagic click-once script to install the blog of your choice and configure a database for it.

    Step 5. Import posts from old blog. (If you want) Wordpress has an option to import from several varieties of blogs. I think most others have something similar, but I can't vouch for them.

    Step 6. Important: Once you can reach your new blog by typing http://www.yourblogdomain.com, announce on your old blog that you have moved to a new address. At this point, I'd stop posting new stories to the old one, as you want the "We've moved" message to stay near the top.

    Step 7. Start promoting your new address. Submit to search engines, directories, link exchanges, etc. Any and all pormotional activities done for the old blog now need to be done for the new one.

    Step 8. (Optional) Once your move announcement has been up a while, time length is up to you, you can close the old account. or you can leave it until blogger or whoever closes it. (Note this may adversely affect you for search engines for a while due to duplicate content, but the choice is yours.)

    Good luck, and happy blog switching.

    If you want to continue to use Blogger as a platform all you need to do is enter in your FTP information under settings:

    1. Go to the control panel in Blogger.

    2. Select Settings and then the subtab Publishing.

    3. Enter the following information in the spaces provided. (Lots of geek speak coming up but I'll do my best to translate):

    a. FTP Server: This is the server that your webhost designates as the file upload server. In my limited experience, it's usually been the same server that your domain is hosted on with an address of ftp.whateveryourdomainnameis.com. Your provider will give your this information and this is where you enter it on Blogger (minus the ftp part).

    b. Blog URL: This is your domain name. Include the full address. So it would look something like: http://whateveryourdomainnameis.com.

    c. FTP Path: This is where you want Blogger to put your blog files. Your space on your host's provider is like an apartment with many different rooms (directories). The FTP program is the moving men and you need to tell the moving men which room you want the furniture (your blog) in. So if you want your blog on the main directory (the livingroom) of the site, the Path would be whateveryourdomainnameis.com. If you wanted it say in a subdirectory (a bedroom) the address would be whateveryourdomainnameis.com/subdirectoryname.

    **Note: The directory must already be set up on your web server. Blogger will not create a directory for itself.**

    d. Blog File Name: Basically the name of the blog file. Now if you have the blog in the main directory of your site and you want it to be the first thing that shows up, you must name it index.html. The reason for this is that web browsers are coded to look for and upload this file first. If you don't want the blog to be the first thing people see then name it anything else and then link to it from your index page.

    e. FTP Username and password: This is the username and password provided to you by your web host to access the FTP server.

    f. Notify Weblogs: Select yes or no if youwant Weblogs to be notified (or not) whenever you update your blog.

    4. Click Save Settings and then try to access your blog at its new address to make sure everything worked.

    A couple of notes.

    Once you upload your blog to its place on whateveryourdomainnameis.com your previous Blogger address will become available to register. Blogger does not have a redirect service so if you want to prevent anyone else from using it, you'll have to go in and re-register it.

    You would continue to administrate your blog by signing into Blogger like normal.

    Good Luck :)

    There is really no such thing as free. You'll pay for it somehow. (Perhaps you'll have their ads messing up your otherwise pristine site, etc.) You can, however, get cheap webhosting from a lot of places. I can't remember who, but I've seen some with a basic plan as low as $5.

    Depending on how you grow your site, you may run into the upper limits of it somewhat quickly, but it is a way to get started.

    i had faced the same situation about 4 months ago; I had just tested WP for the sake of testing and i had no intention to switch over that before testing but its one option of categories really forced me to leave blogger;

    The biggest and might be the only one problem with own domain name and hosting is that it takes a lot of time to be indexed and ranked properly. While in case of blogger its fast process (at least according to my experience). But i would suggest you to switch as soon as possible so that a bad phase of about a month passes soon;

    Well to give you an idea:
    I get an average of 2,000 unique visitors per day and so far this month (16th) I have used 2.5 GB of bandwidth.

    I'm currently on SkyNetHosting.net - They've performed solidly for me. You can host 10 domains with 1 GB of storage and 50 GB bandwidth P/M for $5 per month. You can also sign up for a 30 day trial for free before you decide. No lose situation.

    Good luck!
