So I went hunting for turkey in Nebraska this weekend. I ended up scoring 2 birds. The first one was a Jake. For those of you who don't know anything about turkeys or turkey hunting, a Jake is a bird that is less than 2 years old. Here is the Jake I shot: My father is in the picture on the right. The bird was just under 2 years old, and is what they call a Super Jake, because it was not quite yet mature, but it was close to it. My next bird was the cream of the crop. A big Tom Merrian (Merrian is the breed, Tom is 2 years or older). The bird is 3 years old. I was walking with my scout (guide) through a creek in mud up to my knees. We spotted 2 Toms and a Hen (female) walking down the treeline, and decided to stalk them out. After walking over 400 yards through knee-deep mud and using turkey calls, we peaked over the ravine - nothing. We figured we spooked the birds away, so my guide and I walked out of the creek. We were walking back when all of the sudden he yells "Shoot it! Shoot it!". I turn to the right, he drops to his stomach to avoid getting shot, and I see this HUGE Tom. He flaps himself up from the ravine, and starts running away from us. I lift my shotgun, take off the safety, and pull that trigger. The next thing I knew... Look at the wings on this guy! Well, that was my trip.
