Trying to learn about Safelists

Hi there, I hope someone can help me out with a few questions about Safelists which I have heard about but never used. Just to make sure I've got it right, a safelist is an opt-in email list where all of the members receive and send commercial messages to one another. With that being the case, I would think that conversion rates, or even click-through rates, are almost uselessly low.

    When you've used safelists,
    1) How do you go about finding a good list?

    2) How do you use one successfully?

    3) Worst/best experiences with safelists?

Thanks so much for your feedback!

Safelists are a waste of time.

Consider that almost everyone who joins a safelist is looking to put their sales message in front of someone else. They're not interested in reading other people's sales offers. These people aren't your target market. If you're interested in driving traffic to your site to sell something make a jv offer or start an affiliate program. You'll have much better results.

    HI

Safelists... use to work about 3-4 years ago but now I think you can find better ways to advertise and make your limited time more productive...

They can work pretty well if used correctly and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

    Things to remember:

    1) Only promote marketing /webmaster related sites
    2) Don't advertise a sales page. Advertise your optin page and use safelists to build a list
    3) Use "credit based" safelists as people are required to read your message to earn credits
    4) Copyrighting comes into play here. Catchy headlines and short emails
    5) Listjoe is one good safelist, it's actually a email viral list builder but it works pretty much the same way.

Safelists DO work. If you get a list of a few of the best safelists out there and use them it takes about 30 minutes a day to send your email out to a lot of people. Sure a lot of people won't even open your email, but a lot will. Some of the very best are, http://adtactics.com/members/login.phphttp://www.gotsafelist.com/login_V2.phphttp://the-traffic-secret.com/index.php

Don't use a safelist unless it is credit-based.
One of the best ways to use a safelist is to use their solo ads - you pay for an email to be sent to the whole list at the contact email addresses. (I use this when I'm selling a product and get great results)

Don't listen to people who say safelists don't work. It's just like any other form of advertising, you use it as a PART of your advertising, a little piece of your advertising puzzle.

Thanks guys, I appreciate having both sides and also the feedback that confirms my suspicions that safelists can be a useful tool if used properly. Thanks for the recommendations and I'll keep an eye out for credit-based safelists.
