I just went to one of my favourite sites http://againstallgrain.com/2015/03/25/dairy-free-cashew-sour-cream/ and they're using WP with a custom theme for their recipes. A quick google search gives quite a few options of WP plugins for recipes. Have you tried any of them.

That particular site has a custom theme but without spending a ton of time I don't know if it's a child theme of one that comes with the recipe plugin or completely new.
