Good idea! Its top news submitted by bloggers, and ranked based on score. It ranks the stories based on the ip that ranked them, and how often that ip gets a top story (like digg, but without the comments). It generally has the same stories that slashdot and digg have, but 24-36 hours sooner (it happened for 4 stories between yesterday and today). edit: So far today it has gotten 300+ new stories.
Damn fine bit of work Is it your first? One suggestion though ... try adding this bit of code to the webpage: That way people who don't know much about gadgets will be able to see exactly what it looks like on their google homepage Damn ! that made the page go a bit wide!! How the hell can I copy the code without wrecking the thread? :s
yep, this is my first. Google made it pretty easy to figure out though. Thanks for the compliments and suggestion, I added a view this google gadget link to the top so that people can see what it looks like before adding it. Is there anyway to tell how many people are actually using it? Thanks.
There must be, but I haven't found it yet! If you do.... please let me know. I can see the number of hits my gadgets get, & the people that have added my gadgets to their webpage via my website stats. But have yet to find out how to figure how many people have them on their igoogle
I need to make it update more often, it does the default google 1 hour update (which the site updates every hour to reduce database connections) but they seem to be at completly different times.
Nicely done for your 1st. I wonder how many stories you will get today it you got just 300 yesterday. Interested anyways and I will give it a whirl.
Synch, I really like it. Do you already have a user base? or are you still in the process of building one?
I have a decent sized user base, but I'm trying to make it grow a lot faster. I have a lot of people that use it everyday, so I'm hoping I can get the name out more with gadgets, rss feeds, etc... and hopefully have a big increase in the daily user base. The gadget only displays the top 6, and rss displays the top 20. I want people to want more so they come to the site and see the top 2000 (usually the top 2000 covers about a week of news). One cool thing that I notice as it gets bigger is that user scores get higher, but there are more of them, so every hour when it refreshes the score there are big drops and big gains.
Yep, that's pretty much the expected behaviour. I'm definitely going to try it out and I am very interested to hear about new stuff that you might developing.
Use the 'code' tag (#) and it looks like this... <script src="http://gmodules.com/ig/ifr?url=http://vi.goro.us/gadget.xml&synd=open&w=306&h=160&title=Daily+Updates+Top+Blog+News&border=%23ffffff%7C0px%2C1px+solid+%2382CAFA%7C0px%2C2px+solid+%23BDEDFF%7C0px%2C3px+solid+%23E0FFFF&output=js" type="text/javascript"></script> Code (markup): Lisa
thanks for the comments! I'm going to see if I can drive more traffic through it, but I have to get people to use the gadget!
It seems to get between 200 and 300 a day, some days it will get more but will have more duplicates (going to different blogs, but they are posting about the same event). Today it has gotten around 250.
