Great Thread - Especially the point about the G Gods. (Make sure you capitalize God, you don't want to offend!)

Good point, I think it's worth noting what he says... but of course you take it with a grain of salt as it may be smoke and mirrors.

Anyone else got good tips on developing trust with search engine algorithms, especially Google?

As I said.. imo I see it as trying to develop a link profile like a great content site that gets linked to naturally like a city newspaper....

links are acquired gradually, with varied anchor text, to various pages in the site... (deeplinks), minimal recip, minimal sitewides.

A good way to build trust is to gain links from sites that answer these 3 questions:

    1. Is their content related to yours? You do not want sites linking to yours if their content is not related to your content.
    2. Do they have outbound links to sites that are related to yours? You do not want a site linking to yours that has outbound links to non related sites.
    3. Is their advertising related to their niche? You do not want a site linking to you that advertises car loans on a golf site (for example).

You also do not want to link to sites that fail the 3 questions above.

G is after relevance for the benefit of their searchers and marketshare. IMHO, they are actively seeking relevance by monitoring the 3 questions. This is based on a US Patent that G has applied for... They obviously place alot of weight on this.

I would advise that everyone go through this patent with a fine toothed comb... This is what G is seeking to enforce and, IMHO, I believe that all future aglorithm changes move toward the fulfillment of this patent.

Building relationships with experts in your subject area. Have you tried a blog? Have it as part of your main site, write quality content and let other blogs know. Try highlighting other quality blogs and there content.

    Good points raised so far.

You know, I've been knocking around some really old sites lately... as in really really old sites with links up the yin yan... looking for opportunities to snag a super authority link or two, the kind you are happy to get on the phone for and call locally, interstate or internationally to yarn with the webmaster to soften them up for a great link (free based on relevance).

Looking at those old websites, that still update today, I think I understand where the search engines are coming from with their higher *trust* rating of older sites as authorities.

That's all I want to say for now, otherwise, my tip is go look deeper and older for the free links you will call someone to ask for that would otherwise cost you a grand a month if you paid for them.

    Go the old school links.
