I have read more than once that this is a big no-no.

I can't attest to the accuracy of the statements I read.

I do know that a 302 redirect will cost you. Masking is similar in nature.

What do you mean by masked domains?

Masked domains? Could you expand on that?

When you have another domain name and you change the title-tag, description and keywords and that domain name gets indexed, but goes to your original home page.

Well, i guess this means that you get a domain indexed, yet serve other content to your visitors? I think you know the answer to that yourself :)

Well, what if all the domains are on the same subject, for example Sarasotacopywriter.com - Sarasota-copywriter.com???

You should 301 redirect such domains. If you do a javascript redirect for a user and give a search engine content to index, that's not considered very nice...
