do you have cpanel or ssh access to you files?
You can change permissions with your ftp client too if it allows you. look at all the options and you would find "properties" for files. change it.
Please explain in details what's the problem.

I should really put together a script people could run locally that updates the files through ftp.

just follow the steps in this document and you should be able to run AOM without any problem.

Now about your permission question, if I remember correctly you have to set 777 permission to one file named aom.php and one directory named aom .
in cpanel find the icon that says file manager. there you should be able to find the name of these files. On clicking the names of the file there is an option for changing permission on the right section of the page.

Try it and if there is any problem let me know

I'm a professional programmer. Here is what I did to install AOM to my cheapo $4 a month GoDaddy account:

    1. register a swank domain name like http://www.amazingpig.com/
    2. go to the AOM web site and get their .htaccess mod_rewrite code
    3. paste this into the .htaccess on my website
    4. copy all the AOM files to my website in the web root directory

It "just worked" after that. Asen or I could automate this process, but what kind of automation tools do you guys like best? Slick Windows programs? PHP scripts? Perl? We can do all that stuff, but usually someone pays us nicely for it.

Well I guess an autoinstaller is worth something like $5-$10 per copy.

A simple Perl script could do that. So it could be run under Win, Unix, Web, you name it. It's all about connecting through FTP, installing the files and setting the CHMOD to 777 for some files and directories.

Yeah, but anyone who has problems installing AOM will probably also have problems installing Perl.

I would write a tool for Win32 or .NET 1.x since if someone doesn't already have these, they are too cheap to buy tools, too.

A .NET 1.x app in C# can be very fun for both you and the user...
