    Hi!

I set up a new account on google webmastertools. But i can't confirm that i am the website owner.
I did everything right and uploaded the file, and i can open it. But google says it receives 404 Errors.

Does anybody face the same problem?

How about the other way (adding meta tags)?

i was also facing that problem, but finally sorted out....
    it was on blogspot....
when google ask for the sitemap.xml link then it prints the url and give a box to write the location of sitemap.xml

but i was giving the whole URL in the box....

i used meta tag for the site ownership.

I had this problem, then I changed the permissions of the file to 777 and then Google could find the file, I don't know why this was happening.

I think i'll try that out. I tested both before metatag and file.

If you're referring to how you would set 777 permissions on a file, you can do this by accessing your ftp using an ftp client. Then right click the file you want to change the permission for and select properties/CHMOD and in the box next to the word permissions, type in 777. I use a program called smart ftp to do this. There is another way to change the permissions which is located in cpanel called file manager.

Also double check that the file you need to use for verification in webmaster tools is in the correct location on your server as specified in webmaster tools panel (public html folder) and that it's named correctly.

You should not have to setup permissions for 777. That gives read, write, and execute rights to everyone. If you can access the sitemap file from your web browser, then Google should be able to find it.

Is this an addon domain to your main hosting account that you are trying to verify?
