As of 12 April, the troop strength of the Afghan National Army was 46,177 men and women. That's about half the size it needs to be.

The Afghan National Army is being mentored by instructors from France, the United Kingdom. Canada, Turkey, and of course the United States.

Early problems with conflicting loyalties between the central government and regional warlords have improved, but still represent a drain on troop strength and effectiveness. Many powerful Afghani's don't want a central government, as that is not in their own best interests.

It will take quite a few years for the Afghan government to prove that it is here to stay. Eventually -- perhaps a generation from now -- persistence and hard work will pay off and the people of Afghanistan will see a central government as a natural part of their society -- just as we do in the United States.

 

Of course it took a very long time for that to occur in the US, but that part of history seems often times to be ignored. Everyone is under the impression that new nations are born over night.
