    Tremor rocks country [Bangladesh]

    14 hurt in panic jump

    A moderate earthquake shook the capital and parts of the country early today, causing panic among the people.

    The met office said the tremor measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck at 12:52am. Its epicentre was 238 km northeast off the Dhaka seismic centre.

    At least 14 students at Jagannath, Mohsin and Ziaur Rahman halls in Dhaka University (DU) were injured, jumping off the balconies in fright.

    Abul Kalam Azad of Bangla department who jumped from the window of his second-floor room in Ziaur Rahman Hall broke his leg, reports DU correspondent.

    Panicked at the sudden jolts, students at the dormitories rushed out of their rooms and ran helter-skelter to safety.

    No other casualties were reported as of filing this report at 1:45am.

    Our correspondents from across the country reported that the quake was felt in Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Sunamganj, Netrakona, Kishoreganj, Mymensingh, Gazipur, Jessore, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Bogra.

    People from different parts of the city including Mirpur, Kataban, Shantinagar, Rajabazar, Eskaton, Jatrabari and Lalmatia called The Daily Star office to enquire about the quake.
