Hi, I have a friend in the travel industry whom I have promised to help with his website after the first of the year...his slow season, so I have a personal interest in your post. I like the previous idea of pictures. Most people are social, so perhaps you might add a social section. Subsections could include picture page, family vacation pics, vacation stories, funniest vacations, worst vacation ever, best vacation, best places to go, worst places, where not to go, and so on. Polls (if your forum can do polls) are popular but they seem to work best when a celebrity or well known person is involved.
