Transparent gif links?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by mattmdesign, Nov 23, 2004.

    Hi,
is it against google's rules to use a transparent gif to link to another site? Like a 1px x 1px image outbound link with alt text and title? Do you think they would they penalize for that?
    Thanks, Matt

1PX by 1PX trans are easy to spot as they all have the same file size, I would say google discounts any images under 0.5-1KB

SE spam pure and simple. There is no gray area on this one.

Hi, there was a backlink update after the last PR update. what makes you think that I used a transparent gif as a link? just because I asked the question? Thanks for the replies everyone.

heh, I just noticed that someone gave me a negative reputation point for this thread. How nice :/
Anyway, I was noticing that statcounter.com (ranking very well and has a PR9) gets most of its links from transparent 1px images.

Don't worry, Matt, some poeple are total idiots and give their stupid negative reputations when someone is just asking a legit question. It has happened to me several times and couldn't care less.

I am just having a similar discussion about this with a fellow member. I have also seen many sites using this tactic on their homepage as a way to get inner pages indexed quickly.

i have seen this used by lots of sites but still am not sure about how it effects pr or linkbacks.

i know of another member on this board that uses this technique to link to their links page for some reason. I guess to not confuse visitors with unrelated links.

ya matt like fryman says take no heed about the rep point.. doesnt really matter..

When I first started my website I added a text link consisting of a single period high on the page linking to my site map for 2 months to get the site indexed asap. I dont know if it worked, but it seemed reasonable at the time.
