Transferring backlink to a new domain?

    Hi all,

i recently had issues with my old .com website, i was getting loads of duplicate content with zen cart, so much in fact when my old SEO guy got round to sorting it out, it was to late, to much content got blocked and as a result everything disappeared from google. I though it was my backlinks so i sent a reconsideration request to google and they said they found no issues with my beind indexed, Except not even, site: xxxxx.com ,was working. ive since moved to magento and a faster server in the uk, i had some duplicate show up but it was just a couple of bits i missed in the robots

I found my domain was targetting the USA aswell which although is nice, is not what my products are aimed at, ive purchased a .co.uk domain and have this added to my website, i setup my old .com domain as a add on domain, and redirected it to my new sites .co.uk home page.

Will all my back links transfer over? or will it be a case of having to have them edited one by one? should i be setting up 301 redirect to the relavant pages for instance

"You can buy ps3 network cards at xxx xxx xxx with 24 hour delivery"

that would direct to xbox page. should i be setting up a 301 to the new relevant page from the old domain?, im still really new to this and want to get it right, i cant afford to lose all search results and traffic again its cost me alot of money so far!

Any help u guys can give would be great!

    Hi,

The problem you have is your hit with a Panda penalty by the sounds of things.

This is common with e-commerce sites which is a whole different can of worms when it comes to on page optimisation.

If I were you I would focus on fixing the penalty instead of moving the domain which should only ever be an absolute last resort after all other avenues have been explored.

In answer to your question though, setup a 301 redirect at the .htaccess level page by page

So your 12 month xbox live subscription page from the old url, pushes you to the 12 month xbox live subscription page on the new url.

A WORD OF WARNING: If you have not fixed the issues the caused the initial penalty (which I suspect is Panda, but cant confirm without analysis) then the new domain will eventually trigger the same penalty.

I think when you check backlinks, the tools you mentioned only show you the technical backlinks, without considering whether the target site is permanently redirected. In other words, if you check the backlinks to xyz.com, you won't find any, although Google will pass on (maybe not all) the backlink ranking power to xyz.com
