Transferring a domain from Godaddy to Dreamhost

Hi! I am planning on changing the name of one of my websites which is hosted on Dreamhost and have had to buy a new domain. I have just bought the domain on Godaddy because it was cheaper to buy it there but I want to keep the website hosted on Dreamhost.

Will I have to transfer the domain from Godaddy to Dreamhost? Will that cost me money (since I have just paid $8.99 for the domain)?

Are there any other ways of tackling the problem?

    Thanks

There is no need to transfer the domain. All you need to do is change the name servers in GoDaddy to the Dreamhost name servers.

First thing to do is to go onto Dreamhost and find what their name servers are (probably ns1.dreamhost.com and ns2.dreamhost.com but I am not sure). They should have them posted on their site, if not e-mail them and ask.

After you have the Dreamhost name servers, log into your GoDaddy account, click on MyDomains, then click on the domain you want to change, and above that domain you will see a link for name servers. Click on that link, enter the Dreamhost servers and click on Save or Submit or OK... (don't remember off hand exactly what the link says) and that should do it.

First you go to your control panel at dreamhost and fully host the domain.

Then you go to GoDaddy and change the name servers using the information you were given when you did step one above.

A few hour later you will be in business.

SupremeURLs is dead on, but keep in mind if you don't see changes instantly..it can take up to 48 hrs to have the nameservers be changed on the system.

Don't forget if you want to transfer it's not a fee to transfer your domain. A transfer includes a 1 year registration added on. So it really doesn't cost anything to transfer a domain, just the reg fee (required).

If you just registered the domain name just a while ago, you may not be able to change registrar within the 3 months time frame. Like the rest said, you do not need to have the domain name registered or transferred with your web host.

Everyone is more or less right but at Dreamhost you have to set up your own domain into the name servers. It is like a very easy to use version of an add on domain in cPanel.

If you don't add the domain name to your hosting account it will never show up. I have an account at Dreamhost which is why I chose the exact wording of my first message as I did.
