transfer website from example.com to relevantname-example.com. Should I bother?

Hi guys! I have just finished building a classified adds website. I have worked on it for over 1 year now(mostly doing research and spending nights learning how to edit a code). When I started I had no idea what building a website means and I learnt everything while doing it... I have finally finished it but I have a problem. I have no relevance in the domain name. When I started I toughed that I can become a brand like craigslist or gumtree(silly me) and didn't pay any attention to the domain name, so I did everything on this example.com domain. Should I bother to move the whole website to classifieds-example.com or classifiedsexample.com? At the moment I have no traffic on the website and I am just about to start some SEO(directory registration, forum posting etc).
I would like to keep the example.com domain name and redirect it to classifiedsexample.com. This way I hope I can have the relevance and eventually build a brand. The users will find me on classifiedsexample.com through the search engines(providing I do the SEO to this domain name) and on example.com for easy access.
I just want to know what your opinion is (both generally and from the SEO point of view). Is it worth to do all that? Is it ok for the search engines to do this?
    Thank you!

    Hi!
There is no content(adds) on the site. It literally just the script installed on it for over a year. Since then I just played with it and edited it. I havent done any SEO nor any other way of advertising and because there is no relevance in the name I get 0 results so far...
    Thanks!

Thank you! Will google and the other search engines like this? I will keep the old one and redirect it to the new. Is this something common?
Also, it is a PHP script. It is quite a complex website (or at least for me). I have installed PHPMailer function as well. What would be the beste(safest) way to transfer the content?

Domain Name is a good factor in "relevence".

Although if your already established it is not worth it, but new sites, yes can be a good way to go.
