Hi all, newbie here, so please go easy!

I run a small business and have had the same web address and email for over 8 years.
My current provider/server hasn't performed too well and charges me for the privelidge every year for hosting the site !

It has just come up for anual renewal and I have decided to look elsewhere.

My question is, what happens to the web address that they re-register every 12mths for me ?

Can I apply to register it for myself, or do I need to buy it off them, can they keep it for themselves ?

I have tried to do a search on 'Whois' but I'm not exactly sure where it would tell me who the actual owner is ?

My business name is obviously shown as the registered name, but where do I find the owners name ?

    ICANN Registrar: ?

    Registrant: ?

    Thanks for any help !

Transfer your domain name to another registrar like godaddy or name or any one you want, thats only. Search on whois.net to find the owner of any domain. Contact your hosting provider for transfering the domain name. It takes about 15-30 days to transfer your domain and it varies from registrar to registrar and TLD to TLD. Also cancel your hosting account, if you want to switch over to another host.

to successfully transfer your domain to another registrar you need to access to the current registrar domain control panel.

prior to initiate any transfer request be sure to:

    - check the email listed in whois, you must have access to this mailbox
    - unlock the domain into losing registrar control panel
    - generate a EPP code for transfer. this code is needed by the winning registrar.

you will likely lose your money is these 3 conditions aren't met, if this is the case you need your hosting provider assistance..

    ciao :)

Thanks for you replies and help !

I must admit that not being familiar with this sort of thing makes it a little more complicated for me ?!

By the sounds of it though, maybe I should just contact the current website provider and explain that I want to transfer the address etc to another provider, or maybe I could register it and keep it for a later date myself ?:confused:
