I might be wrong but I think if you hook them directly you need a 'special' cable, aka a "cross-over" cable.

i have a crossover cable, and i connected my laptop and desktop together, but nothing happens. like for example, if i put my digital camera in (i know it uses USB), the computer reads it, but there is no detection of the cross over cable. how would i go upon transfering files?

Y, windoze is retarded like that.

maybe you have to make them part of the same workgroup?

I've always connected my network via my router so I dunno if th same BS applies from PC to PC with a direct cable.
