Traffic, Traffic, Traffic!

Having done a lot of researching i have come to conclusion that one of the most important aspects of any marketing is getting traffic.
You could have the best looking website in the world but if no-one is visiting it whats the point.
So if you want to promote any affiliate network / program you have to have the people to click through in the first place, hence no money to make!
Finding out the secrets of driving traffic is where i think the key lies and its not easy!
What do people on here use, is it adwords, links, keywords, getting high on google is another factor.....any tips or thoughts much appreciated.

All of the above. SEO is nice, but slow like priyakochin said and you don't want your entire business wiped out by an algorithm shuffle. Do SEO, but learn PPC also... you never want all your eggs in one basket

I find for low traffic sites pay per sale is much more productive and PPC doesn't work that well if you don't have much traffic (low traffic = low clicks = low pay)

sure thing the main thing online is traffic and if you aint got it theres nothing you can get from online. So what everyone is after is designing a good site and then sending lots and lots of traffic that could be at hand to them sites and then make the money from commision thats the aim...now the big probs is what other ways to generate bigger traffic? this will be very very good.

yes you can generate traffic without spending money on a credit card, but unfortunately I think you will inevitably end up having to spending some money to fix your keyboard as caps lock seems to be stuck.

You should read some articles on SEO as previously mentioned it takes some time but will be worth it, I think it would be naive to imagine you can start affiliate marketing and make big bucks early on without spending any of your own money if you want to do it on the cheap (bum marketing) then you need to put the time in.

As far as bum marketing, it costs nothing to set up a blog, and all web 2.0. You have to do the work if you want to make the money.

I recently (a few days ago) set up a review site for my web host (ReviewEleven2 dot com), and I'm in the process of figuring out what does and doesn't work for me.

For instance, posting my link in forums like this does not seem to generate a ton of traffic. Hopefully the few people who do click it will be genuinely helped, but it doesn't seem to work much.

I bought an AdWords ad. So far I've paid 5 cents because it rarely shows, and even more rarely gets clicked. I probably have a thing or two to learn there, but I genuinely think there are just not that many people searching for my keywords.

I bought a few text ads on AdBrite. It has generated a ton of traffic, but almost all of it has been from China in the middle of the night, and none of generates ad clicks on my site. Again, I'm sure I just need to learn a few things and tweak my campaigns.

Tonight I tried something new. I bought some traffic from Expired-Targeted. Apparently they buy domains and work deals with other companies who own expired domains to redirect traffic from those domains to sites that are targeting the same users. So I was able to target people who are trying to go to web hosting companies, and hopefully they'll stick around, read or leave a review, and maybe even click an ad.

It guarantees 5000 visits within 30 days for about $30, so we'll have to see if it turns out. I'm hoping that the users won't just be ticked off that they landed on some page they weren't expecting.

    Any other good ideas?

Forget 1 page website. You can optimize it to rank 1st for some keywords, but why, to get 100 visitors per day? If you want traffic you need 10.000+ subpages of your site. This way there is a chance to get about 3000-5000 visitors/day. There is no chance for you to write so much content. That is why community sites (classifieds, video sharing sites, article sites, online shops with many products...) have so much traffic. Let visitors create content for you.
