Traffic is good and increasing, but alexa is dropping???

Hi,

My alexa ranking is something 260k now. A couple of weeks ago it was something 180k-200k.

And actually I have over 4x more traffic now than before..
I'm getting about 25k pageviews daily and thousands of them are uniques..

How that can be possible

It is not just your site, we notice our site and many other sites from world wide. Alexa did change look and they must have change that unique ip traffic counts, before you (or any site owner) can be on your site all day and alexa rank would go higher, but not any more.

What do you think guys about our above opinion? do you have any idea how to get better Alexa rank after new changes? Thanks

It simply means that you are starting to get more quality traffic and less Indian traffic. Alexa ranking is a benchmark for how much predominantly Indian traffic you are getting - aka traffic nobody cares about and advertisers pay little or nothing for. When Indian traffic drops, your Alexa ranking also drops even if quality, western traffic keeps rising.

 

Alexa means absolutely NOTHING. Nobody in the world outside of webmasters uses it.

 

I wouldn't necessarily say that Alexa Ranking means absolutely nothing. But would I say it is accurate? Absolutely not! Just like what johncarrera had mentioned one one of our sites our daily uniques jumped and continues to climb. But our Alexa ranking continued to drop. Yeah a head scratcher. But I think I have read somewhere, I don't know if it was on Alexa's site or not, that one of Alexa's major determinants in calculating it's ranking statistics is if your visitors have the Alexa toolbar installed. They calculate for every one person that visits your site with an Alexa toolbar nine other people out of 100 will also visit your site. So basically they are playing a guesstimate game.
But one instance where Alexa ranking does come into play, as I have noticed is if you are advertising or looking to advertise on sites. Frequently a sites Alexa ranking is displayed along with other information about the site. Hence playing into a possible determinant factor into whether one will conceivably get more advertisers or if I want to advertise on said website.

 

Alexa can have very useful information about websites. Tho it is fun to watch as your ranking slides under 1million or under 500k or under 100k ... what's more important is "sites linking in" ... for example... Ebay has just over 25,000 sites that link into it. And Alexa tool bar will show those sites that link in all kinds of other information.

Over all... it's just a fun tool... what's coming up in your webalizer or AWstats or Raw Access Logs is more important.

However, back in the day... when my Alexa ranking was under 100k ... I was bringing in about $1500 a month from my website. So I know that it is good for Something... like a good goal to strive for!

 

I normally use traffic stats from compete.com as it's a code on your website that counts all visitors.
Alexa is fun to play around with. Alexa is sometimes important if you want to sell your site as well!

 

Alexa get traffic info from users which have alexa toolbar intalled.

 

Yes, so I'm thinking this kind of visitors (who has a toolbar) have decreased from my site though other traffic has increased. That's interesting..

 

Alexa means nothing mate, it's worthless as a real/live tool.

I had a high traffic website but the users who visited this never had a alexa plugin so my alexa rank was still very high.

Alexa is a good tool but sometimes it goes haywire ... My site was getting 10-20k Hits daily and it was increasing but my alexa was going the other way around :S

So yes it sucks sometimes.

 

dont worry much about your alexa ranking..its good thing your getting good traffic
most people dont consider alexa ranking...
