That's how Alexa rank works, the more traffic you get the lower the number.

Remember that only people with the Alexa bar installed effect your rating, so take it with a pinch of salt.

Alexa is not a reliable indicator at the best of times so if you are seeing a 'actual' increase in vistors why worry about what Alexa tells you,use some other form of reliable indicator like awstats.

I have noticed this trend as well. I used to use blog explosion. When I used it consistently -- my alexa rank got better. When I stopped for even a day- it dropped faster than it rose.. I think the computations over compensate for sudden drops in traffic after sudden spurts.

    Q...

Many people check quality of website by seeing alexa though it is not reliable, it affect our website reputation.

Alexa rank for a website is based on number of users who visits the website as well as the number of pages on that website viewed by those users. By installing the Alexa toolbar it is beneficial.

Maybe the competition got higher. Previously, you can get 570.000 alexa points, but now even with 10% visitor increase, you can only rank 718.000

As others have mentioned Alexa isn't always all that reliable. Another thing to take into account is your bounce rate and how long people are staying on your site. One of the metrics that Alexa computes is how long visitors stay on your site. So you might have more visitors but they might be staying on your site for shorter periods of time leading to a lower Alexa ranking.

that is the strange thing: UVs increase, bounce rate decreased, time people stay on site increased by 20 seconds over last months but alexa raised by 150.000.

alexa doesnt depend on your traffic only , if you backlinks fall or you stop updating your blog reglarly it happens

one of my blog has 300k alexa with only 20 visitors per day :) and my other site is 700k alexa with 100,000 ppl per month

Firstly, Alexa is not an absolute indicator of traffic or of the website's importance, but it is a relative index where different sites vie for rank with one another. Therefore, if other sites have got comparatively more traffic than you, then your traffic increase is immaterial.

Secondly, Alexa does not depend solely on your traffic. In fact, it depends more on "traffic of Alexa users" on your site, i.e., those who have Alexa toolbar, etc., installed on their computers.

Thirdly, it appears that Alexa also depends on your backlinks, etc.

Fourthly, there are wild fluctuations in Alexa rank generally, especially when the rank is beyond say 200000 or 300000.

When you say Alexa drops, do you mean the Alexa value is going down? (If that is the case then it's a good thing, as the lower the Alexa value the better the traffic)

I am sure Alexa gives approximate statistics only. The data is not accurate

I didn't realize people still talked about Alexa Rank. Isn't 2012? Guess some things will never end.
