Traffic Dropped by 80% Moving from HTTP to HTTPS

    Hi friends,

I would like to let all of you know that, I moved 04 of our websites from HTTP to HTTPS 72 hours back (due to Google's new SSL policy). Now I have noticed that, my traffic has dropped by 80 % to 90 %.

Now, I can find my website to Page 05 while it was on the 2 - 5 position of 1st page. I have no idea how can i regain my possible back.

Should I get this back to HTTP again? I do not want you to be victim same mistake.

    I am at a loss :(

72 hours is just a blip.

I've moved one site and there was no noticeable difference. We're looking for longterm improvement.

Have you checked webmaster tools for any hints?

In March 2014 Matt Cutts Matt wanted to ensure that sites that utilize SSL encryption would see a ranking boost within Google.

So don't worry for a temporary fall. Make sure you have performed these steps.

1- Set up 301-redirects from HTTP to HTTPS
2- all pages' "canonical" tags to their HTTPS versions
3- Started changing the external incoming links to HTTPS, slowly, where we can
4- Made sure all the 3rd-party scripts, plugins and images on our site use protocol-independent URLs so there's no security warning in browsers (remember to test this in all major browsers. Sometimes Chrome does not show a warning where FF does! Also, you probably use some IE-compatible workarounds as well, like the favicon hacks etc. Test them all)
and please read this article: https://www.jitbit.com/alexblog/240-moving-our-site-to-https-and-the-early-seo-effects-of-it/

Unlikely the problem as you are still rankings, but worth quickly checking your error logs to make sure nothing went wrong during the move to HTTPS.

In my experience I don't think that this shifting to Https really affects your rankings and traffic. The basis is still the weight of the website on how the site page content engage with the targeted audience and being a hub of information to the users. It doesn't matter if it is http or https.

It's just a myth that https will get you more traffic.

Hi Banglamart, it's like 2 months. Are you still facing same trouble? Did you use 301 redirect for all http links to https?

I think a temporary loss of traffic - it is quite logical thing, because it is necessary for google to reindex the entire site. It takes certain time.

I've decided to take a pass on the http-to-https move. Mine is a noncommercial, informational site. I don't wish to jump through all the hoops required in this change. I don't have a need for the security https provides to websites making financial transactions.

Seems after upgrading my sites to HTTPS a lot of other sites don't accept it since they said it costs them more money on their end to support secure. Seems like this topic really hasn't been brought up within the marketing community much.

I did also make redirection https://www.redsymboltechnologies.com/ and get good ranking boost around 20 position for some good keywords 'web development company in Jaipur" and etc.
