Trademark bidding?

    Is it possible to bid on high volume trademark and display a completely different offer?

    For example can I bid on keyword "AOL" and display an ad for ringtones?

    Yes, but you may get a low quality score as a result.
    If it's a trademarked term, you can't show the trademark in your ad.

    Trademark is really hard to get. It will be a bit expensive at the beginning, because as ButlerPatches said, you will not be able to use the trademark term in your ad; so your ad will not be well optimized for the keyword.
    But if people click on them, maybe your quality score will be improved in time.
    And you could optimize it for more specific keyword searches - a bad example probably - aol ringtones - so your ads will have better price.

    even though "AOL" is a trade marked keyword , but you should avoid it using , because it is highly un-targeted .

    You can do it but along with low QS you are likely to be hit with high min. first page bid and, speaking from experience, your ads are unlikely to be shown unless you 'cough-up' even if no one else is bidding. As busweb advises the best option is to combine the 'AOL' with other keywords; If you already have a high QS for 'ringtones', say, you should get a better QS and lower CPC.

    Don't bid for irrelevant keywords, save your money for something else.

    The trouble is, who's definition of 'irrelevant' do you use?
    I bid on a trademark and Google tell me that searcher's find my ad and landing page are not relevant and yet those searchers who do click my ad usually stay longer and look at more pages than average! For those who search the trademark and recognize what I offer I am highly relevant, for the majority who search that trademark for other reasons I am totally irrelevant. And, no matter how good Google make their search algorithm it is always going to struggle recognizing that relevance since I am aiming at a tiny, relatively unimportant, niche within the overall scope of the target company.

    This keyword has “zero” advertiser competition. This scenario is certainly not “keyword targeted” but similar to content network.
