Tracking Affiliate Codes Through Opt-In Emailing Lists

    Hi,

The question I am discussing here is what are the various ways of tracking people's affiliate ID through an opt-in emailing list.

Say someone signs up for my affiliate program, for example at Clickbank. They get a hop URL which sends people to my sales promo page, which captures people's email addresses and then directs them to a page on which they get an offer to buy something right away.

For the people who do not buy right away, but sign up for the free email newsletter (which I am thinking is going to be a lot of people for my product), then some time later on, they click on the link to purchase my product that is in one of the emails, and then buy the product.

My question is, in this case, how does the tracking of an affiliate's code work?

I am still very much a noob at internet marketing, but I am guessing that it probably happens via cookies that Clickbank (or whatever company I end up using) puts on the potential customer's computer, and then the cookie is read later on when the customer returns and goes to the Clickbank https payment page. Is that how it works?

In that case, the tracking of the affiliate tracking would be lost every time the cookie disappears (such as when the user clears their internet cache, or uses another browser, or another computer, etc).

What about tracking the affiliate ID through the actual email list system?? This is what seems to me to be the ideal solution, where the email addresses in the opt-in list are stored in a database along with the affiliate ID that generated the lead. Then, each email sent to potential buyers via the opt-in list would contain the affiliate's own hop url in the url to purchase my product.

This seems to me like the ideal way to handle things.

Do any of the commercial autoresponder systems (such as AWeber) provide this functionality?
