Tracker report incorrect results

Discussion in 'Keyword Tracker' started by William Martin, Oct 12, 2005.

I seem to be getting incorrect results with this tool. An example as follows:

My website IS ranking for a term in Google.com and Google.co.uk. Keyword Tracker is reporting the term is -9,990 which is blatantly incorrect. I did a check just before checking the real ranking. Can anyone advise what is causing this wrong data?

    Thank you

There are a lot of reasons. First, there are sometimes data center differences which means that some google servers report different results than others. Second, there can be a fluctuation in the results altogether. Third, you may be looking at www.google.co.uk, but have your tracker set up to look for results here in the states. Fourth, there could be a misspelling in the URL that you have set up. And Fifth, it could be just another system perpetrated by the man to keep a brother down.

Check the results using the data center query under the tools menu. You might see some differences there.

I'm finding the same thing as far as results. They are way off... either that or they are delayed. My site just had a significant change in ranking for many keywords for some reason; if I do a manual search that is. According to the tracker, nothing has changed. I thought maybe it was a data center issue and that a couple days would straighten things out. Still, no change.

nevetS: I looked for the 'data center query under the tools menu' that you mentioned. Can you give us a bigger hint? I can't find it.

    TIA

Also, unless you are using the advanced usage script, the results you are going to see would be if you were in San Diego, California (Google geotargets based on end user IP address). If you want to see results as seen by someone in the UK, you would need to use the advanced usage script on a server physically in the UK.

I am doing this and the results are still incorrect. I have advanced usage script on my server and have set preferences to UK results. My server is also in the UK.

    Hi William,

The issue you have encountered may not be related to geographic location issues at all.

It could simply be that you have your server configured to display both www.yourdomain.com and yourdomain.com seperately and are checking results for either:
http://yourdomain.com or www.yourdomain.com when it is the other format for your site that is appearing in Google's results.

FAQ 17 for Digital Point's keyword tracker tool says...

"I'm getting an N/A (not available) ranking, but I know it should be in there. Make sure your URL matches... are you entering http://www.yourdomain.com, but Google returns http://yourdomain.com for example? It does a simple pattern match, so if Google returns http://www.yourdomain.com/products/wigets/ for example, you could enter the URL in the keyword tool as the exact URL or something like: http://www.yourdomain.com or even just yourdomain.com."

So I find it best to just enter yourdomain.com as that will match any result containing "yourdomain.com"

Also, for advice about how to avoid the issue altogether by getting yourdomain.com to terminate at www.yourdomain.com see:

    Hope this helps,
