Trackbacks - how do you use them?

    Can anyone explain how to use trackbacks to increase SERPS of blog?

    My understanding is that trackbacks are (for the most part) nofollow, which would make them relatively useless for increasing SERPS of a blog. Someone can correct me if I am mistaken.
