When it comes to explain Trackbacks, it’s an exercise that makes a great judge of the skill of any blogging expert, because they are hard to explicate. So here I go, and feel free to judge me :)

Basically, when you write a post about something on your blog, and one of your readers likes it, he would leave a comment telling his opinion..

Well, how about leaving a comment about your blog post in my blog ? Here where Trackbacks come in!

Oussama, makes since. Trackbacks are good if you get some good blogs to pick up on your post!

But you end up getting mighty annoyed when you see those auto blogs picking up your post.

Well of course like anything fun or cool online, the evil bastard sapmmers got busy funneling their sewage into automated Trackbacks pingbots that left everyone' s blogs with dainty messages about mortgages, online poker and Viagra. Most comment spam blockers are now configured to also scan Trackbacks to help stem the tide of spammy Trackbacks.

Which is why I disable trackbacks. If someone wants to blog about my site, awesome! But do so becasuse its providing useful content to your blog readers and not just expecting a trackback link in return.

Thanks for the explanation! I thought I had a good idea as to what trackbacks were, and you reaffirmed my thoughts!

Trackbacks are usually often not included in the calculation of your blog's Google PageRank. I presume this applies to the other search engines as well.
